HVAC Systems: German Industrial Chillers and AHUs to Latvia
A new commercial building in Riga needed its climate control system installed before the opening date. 2 truckloads of HVAC equipment from a German manufacturer: a 6-tonne chiller unit and 2 air handling units (AHUs) weighing 3 tonnes each. Crane unloading required - units go directly to the rooftop.
What happened
HVAC units are heavy, oversized, and must be lifted by crane to the building rooftop. The building was in Riga city center - limited crane access, street closure needed. The chiller and AHUs had to arrive on the same morning to match the crane booking.
What made it difficult
- 16-tonne chiller + 2 x 3-tonne AHUs - crane lift to rooftop
- 2Riga city center - street closure permit for crane operation
- 3Both trucks must arrive same morning (5 AM) for crane slot
- 4Units cannot be tilted more than 15 degrees during lift
- 5Refrigerant-charged chiller requires careful handling (no impacts)
How we handled it
Street closure permit obtained from Riga City Council 2 weeks in advance. 80-tonne mobile crane booked for 5 AM start. Both trucks arrived at 4:30 AM from our overnight staging point outside Riga. Chiller lifted first (heaviest, most delicate), positioned on pre-built rooftop brackets. Then both AHUs. All 3 units on the roof by 9 AM. Street reopened by 10 AM. The building's HVAC contractor started connections immediately.
