Cargo Insurance
Carrier liability covers a fraction of your cargo value. When a container falls into the sea or a truck overturns, the gap between what's covered and what you lose can be devastating. Insurance closes that gap. Particularly vital for high-value sectors like electronics, medical products, and chemicals.

If something goes wrong, we manage the entire claims process: damage documentation, surveyor coordination, insurer communication. You focus on your business while we handle recovery.
Why Cargo Insurance Through LANGINO LOGISTICS Saves Money
Fraction of Cargo Value
Insurance costs just 0.1-0.5% of cargo value. For a €50,000 shipment, that's €50-250 to protect against total loss. The math is straightforward - one incident without insurance costs more than years of premiums.
Right-Sized Coverage
We don't over-insure standard cargo or recommend unnecessary extensions. We match coverage to actual risk - saving you money while maintaining full protection where it matters.
Volume Discounts
Regular shippers benefit from annual open policies with lower per-shipment rates. No need to arrange individual certificates for each shipment - simplified process, reduced cost.
Understanding Cargo Insurance
Cargo insurance protects the full commercial value of goods during international transport. Unlike carrier liability, which is limited by international conventions and often covers only a fraction of cargo value, insurance provides complete financial protection against loss or damage.
For China-EU shipments, the 60-90 day transit with multiple handling points creates significant exposure. Containers can be damaged during loading, lost at sea, stolen in port, or destroyed by fire. Carrier liability under Hague-Visby rules is limited per package or per kg - often covering just 10-20% of commercial electronics or machinery value.
At LANGINO LOGISTICS, cargo insurance is integrated into our freight service. We present insurance options with your freight quote, issue certificates before cargo moves, and support you through any claims process. This integration ensures no gaps between when your cargo moves and when coverage applies.
Choosing the Right Coverage
All-Risks Coverage
Covers physical loss or damage from any external cause during transit. Recommended for high-value, fragile, or sensitive cargo. The broadest protection - if loss occurs and it's not specifically excluded, you're covered.
Named Perils
Covers specific listed risks: fire, collision, theft, natural disasters. Lower premium than all-risks, suitable for standard commodities with moderate value where you want cost-effective protection against major incidents.
Total Loss Only
Covers complete loss from catastrophic events. Lowest cost option, but no coverage for partial damage. Appropriate for bulk cargo where partial loss is operationally manageable and price matters most.
War & Strikes Extension
Standard policies exclude war, civil unrest, and strikes. If cargo transits conflict areas or politically unstable regions, extended coverage is available at additional premium.
Declared Value
Insurance pays based on declared value - declare accurately. Under-declaration leads to proportional reduction of claims (co-insurance). Include full commercial value plus freight cost (CIF basis).
ICC Insurance Classifications
Institute Cargo Clauses - the international standard for cargo insurance coverage levels
The broadest cargo insurance coverage. Covers physical loss or damage from any external cause unless specifically excluded. Exclusions are limited to inherent vice, wilful misconduct, inadequate packing, delay, insolvency, and nuclear contamination. Recommended for electronics, machinery, high-value consumer goods, and fragile cargo.
Covers loss or damage from fire, explosion, vessel stranding/sinking/capsizing, collision, jettison, earthquake, volcanic eruption, lightning, washing overboard, and water entry from sea/lake/river. Does NOT cover theft, pilferage, or non-delivery. Suitable for standard manufactured goods and moderate-value bulk commodities.
The most basic coverage. Covers only fire, explosion, vessel stranding/sinking/capsizing, collision, jettison, and general average sacrifice. Lowest premium but significant coverage gaps. Suitable for low-risk bulk cargo and raw materials where partial damage risk is minimal.
Insurance by Transport Mode
Each transport mode has specific risks, liability limits, and insurance considerations
Sea Freight Insurance
Longest transit time and highest risk exposure. Key factors: general average contribution, Hague-Visby liability limits (2 SDR/kg or 666.67 SDR/package), container damage from stacking and weather. Under CIF and CIP Incoterms, the seller must arrange minimum insurance - CIF requires at least ICC (C), while CIP requires ICC (A) coverage.
CIF/CIP Incoterms: seller is obligated to arrange cargo insurance. CIF = minimum ICC (C), CIP = minimum ICC (A).
Air Freight Insurance
Fast transit reduces exposure time, but cargo value per kg is typically highest. Montreal Convention limits carrier liability to 22 SDR/kg (~€26/kg). For a single pallet of electronics worth €200,000 at 500kg, carrier liability covers only €13,000. Air cargo insurance is critical for tech, pharmaceuticals, and luxury goods.
Montreal Convention: carrier liable for max 22 SDR/kg. Gap can exceed 90% of cargo value.
Road Freight Insurance
CMR Convention limits carrier liability to 8.33 SDR/kg (~€9.5/kg). EU road transport faces risks from accidents, theft at rest areas, and weather. Multi-country transit adds complexity with different regulatory environments. Essential for high-value goods on European routes.
CMR Convention: carrier liable for max 8.33 SDR/kg. €100k cargo at 10t = max €95k recovery.
Rail Freight Insurance
Growing China-EU rail corridor (15-18 days) creates new insurance needs. COTIF/CIM limits carrier liability to 17 SDR/kg. Rail shipments face risks at border crossings, gauge changes (1520mm to 1435mm), and extreme temperature variations across Eurasia.
COTIF/CIM: carrier liable for max 17 SDR/kg. Gauge change risks at EU-CIS borders.
Insurance Premium Guide
Indicative rates - actual premium depends on cargo and route
Premiums calculated as percentage of declared cargo value. High-value, fragile, or dangerous goods may have higher rates. Annual policies offer volume discounts.
Carrier Liability vs. Cargo Insurance
Understanding the protection gap
| Aspect | Carrier Liability Only | With Cargo Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage amount | Weight-based limits | Full declared value |
| Cause of loss | Carrier fault only | All external causes |
| Proof required | Prove carrier negligence | Prove loss occurred |
| Exclusions | Many common situations | Few, clearly defined |
| Claim process | Often contested | Straightforward |
| Recovery time | Months, if at all | 30-60 days typical |
What's Covered
Physical Damage
Loss or damage during loading, transit, transshipment, and unloading
Theft & Non-Delivery
Theft, pilferage, and cargo that never arrives
Transport Incidents
Vehicle overturning, vessel sinking, derailment, collision
Natural Disasters
Storms, floods, earthquakes under all-risks coverage
General Average
Your share of jettisoned cargo value in sea freight
Survey & Salvage
Costs for damage assessment and cargo salvage
Common Insurance Mistakes to Avoid
How to ensure your coverage actually protects you
Underinsuring to save on premium
Claim payout proportionally reduced - €50k coverage on €100k cargo = 50% payout
Our approach: We ensure declared value matches actual commercial value
Assuming carrier liability is enough
CMR limits: ~€8.5/kg. €100k shipment at 10 tonnes = max €85k recovery
Our approach: We explain the liability gap and recommend appropriate coverage
Not documenting cargo condition at origin
Pre-existing damage claim rejected - no proof of when damage occurred
Our approach: We advise on proper documentation before shipment
Delaying damage notification
Late notification can void coverage under policy terms
Our approach: We provide 24/7 claims notification support
Disposing of damaged goods before survey
No evidence = no claim. Insurers require independent damage verification
Our approach: We coordinate surveys and guide you through claims process
FAQ
Premiums typically range from 0.1% to 0.5% of cargo value depending on commodity, route, and coverage level. For a €50,000 shipment, expect €50-250 for comprehensive all-risks coverage. High-risk cargo or routes may have higher rates.
Real Example: Electronics Container Loss
Container of consumer electronics valued at €85,000 fell overboard during storm on China-EU route
Without Insurance
- Carrier offered €12,750 (Hague-Visby limit)
- 6 months of dispute over liability
- Legal fees pursuing full recovery
- Net recovery: ~€10,000
- Total loss: €75,000
With All-Risks Insurance
- Insurance premium paid: €340 (0.4%)
- Claim filed with documentation
- Survey coordinated, evidence compiled
- Full value paid: €85,000
- Settlement time: 45 days
