Spices from India: 2 Containers with Full Food Safety Compliance
A Latvian food company importing spices from Indian producers - turmeric, pepper, cardamom, cumin. 2 twenty-foot containers via sea from Mumbai to Riga. Food imports into the EU require fumigation certificates, health certificates, and compliance with EU food safety regulations. We handled the full chain from Indian supplier to Latvian warehouse.
What happened
Spices are a food product with strict EU import controls. Every shipment must pass border inspection with fumigation certificates (methyl bromide treatment), phytosanitary certificates, and laboratory analysis reports. Missing any document can result in weeks of delay or cargo rejection.
What made it difficult
- 1EU food safety regulations - strict documentation requirements
- 2Fumigation certificate must be issued within specific timeframe before shipping
- 3Phytosanitary certificate from Indian authorities
- 4Laboratory analysis for contaminants (aflatoxins, pesticide residues)
- 535-day sea transit - container ventilation to prevent mold
How we handled it
We coordinated with the Indian supplier to ensure all documentation was obtained before container loading: fumigation certificate, phytosanitary certificate, laboratory analysis report, health certificate. Containers loaded with ventilation gaps between pallets to prevent condensation. EU pre-arrival notification filed 24 hours before vessel arrival in Riga. Border inspection passed first time - all documents in order. Containers released to client's warehouse same day.
