6 Jet Skis: Finland to Latvia in Winter Conditions
A Latvian water sports dealer purchased 6 jet skis from a Finnish distributor. February delivery - temperatures below -15C on the route. The watercraft had fuel and fluids that could freeze and crack engine blocks. Enclosed trailer with heating, ferry crossing Helsinki to Tallinn, then road to Riga.
What happened
Jet skis are not winterized for road transport - they contain water in cooling systems, fuel in tanks, and oil that thickens in extreme cold. A standard open trailer would expose them to -15C for 12+ hours. The route also includes a sea crossing.
What made it difficult
- 1February temperatures -15C to -20C on route
- 2Watercraft fluids freeze below -10C - engine damage risk
- 36 units each weighing 300-400 kg - proper securing on trailer
- 4Ferry crossing Helsinki-Tallinn - salt spray exposure risk
- 5Enclosed heated trailer required - limited availability in winter
How we handled it
Enclosed curtainside trailer with auxiliary heater maintaining +5C inside. Each jet ski secured with ratchet straps to floor anchor points - no metal-to-metal contact (foam padding). Ferry booked Helsinki to Tallinn (2h), then direct drive to Riga. Total transit: 14 hours from Finnish warehouse to Latvian showroom. All 6 units arrived with zero cold damage.
