35 days at sea. Salt air, humidity swings, condensation inside containers. For PCBs and sensors, that is a death sentence without proper protection. Our client needed 2 containers of electronic components from Shenzhen - 800+ part numbers, each vulnerable to moisture and static during the long ocean crossing.
What happened
Electronic components are destroyed by moisture and static. A container crossing two oceans faces temperature swings that cause condensation - what the industry calls "container rain." The client's previous supplier lost 8% of a shipment to corrosion. With 800+ different part numbers, every item needed individual protection, and proving moisture damage for insurance claims is notoriously difficult.
What made it difficult
- 135-day sea transit with humidity up to 95% in tropical zones - components exposed to weeks of moisture
- 2Container rain (condensation) damages unprotected PCBs - water droplets form on ceiling and fall onto cargo
- 3Static discharge can kill microcontrollers - a single spark during handling destroys chips worth hundreds
- 4800+ different part numbers - each needs individual anti-static bags, not bulk wrapping
- 5Insurance claims for moisture damage are notoriously difficult to prove without continuous monitoring data
How we handled it
Every component was packed in individual anti-static bags at the factory. Desiccant gel sachets were placed throughout each container - quantity calculated by container volume and expected humidity exposure. Moisture indicator cards were positioned at 6 points inside each container to detect any water intrusion during transit. Container condition was inspected before loading - floor, walls, ceiling, and door seals checked for leaks. A humidity data logger recorded conditions throughout the 35-day voyage for post-arrival verification and insurance documentation.
