Premium Crystal Glasses: China to Kazakhstan via Rail Corridor
A Kazakh buyer ordered premium crystal glasses and tableware from a Chinese manufacturer. One 40-foot container - thousands of individually wrapped pieces. Rail corridor from China through Kazakhstan border. EAEU customs regime. The challenge: not a single piece could arrive broken.
What happened
Crystal is among the most fragile cargo categories. Rail transport through Central Asia involves gauge changes, shunting impacts, and temperature swings. The buyer had already lost a previous shipment (12% breakage) with another forwarder who used standard packaging.
What made it difficult
- 1Crystal = ultra-fragile, previous shipment had 12% breakage
- 2Rail corridor with gauge change at China-Kazakhstan border (shunting impacts)
- 3Temperature swings -20C to +30C in Central Asian corridor
- 4EAEU customs at Kazakhstan border (different from EU)
- 5Individual wrapping verification needed before container sealing
How we handled it
We supervised packing at the Chinese factory: each piece double-wrapped in foam and bubble, placed in individual cardboard cells within master cartons. Master cartons strapped to pallets with anti-slip mats. Container interior fitted with inflatable dunnage bags to prevent any cargo shift during gauge changes and shunting. Pre-shipment inspection verified packing quality before container sealed. EAEU customs documentation prepared in advance. Result: zero breakage on arrival in Almaty.
