Children's Products: 4 Containers from China to Latvia
Children's products face the strictest safety requirements in the EU. One rejected batch can delay an entire Christmas season. Our client needed 4 containers of toys and children's accessories from China - and every single item had to pass EN-71 safety testing and carry verified CE marking before it could enter Latvia.
What happened
Every toy and children's product must pass EN-71 safety testing and carry CE marking. Our client's previous shipment was held at customs for 3 weeks due to missing test reports. This time, with 4 containers from 3 factories, the documentation volume was enormous - and the Christmas deadline was non-negotiable.
What made it difficult
- 1EN-71 safety testing required for every product line - mechanical, flammability, and chemical tests
- 2CE marking verification needed before shipping, not after - rejections at port mean 3+ week delays
- 3Factory audit to confirm packaging matches certified samples - labels, warnings, materials must all align
- 4Age-warning labels must be in Latvian - Chinese factories rarely have correct Baltic language templates
- 5Customs holds are common for children's products without complete documentation - one missing report blocks the entire container
How we handled it
We arranged pre-shipment inspection at all three Chinese factories. Our agent verified CE certificates and EN-71 test reports against actual products on the production line - not just paperwork, but physical checks that labels, materials, and packaging matched certified samples. Latvian-language age-warning labels were printed and applied at the factory before loading. The complete documentation package per container was compiled before sailing so customs clearance in Riga took 1 day instead of the 3 weeks the client experienced before.
