CF6-80E1 Engine: Athens → Riga in 52 Hours
July. Ambient temperature in Athens: 38 degrees. A CF6-80E1 engine sitting on an open yard. The oil system seals, electronic harnesses, and accessory gearbox - all sensitive to prolonged heat exposure. We had to move 4,200 kg from Athens to Riga across 2,800 km without letting the engine bake.
What happened
The CF6-80E1 has oil seals rated for storage below 35 degrees Celsius. In the Balkans in July, road surface temperatures can reach 55 degrees, and a tarpaulin-covered engine on a low-loader absorbs heat like an oven. The route through Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia meant 1,200 km in the hottest corridor before reaching cooler central Europe.
What made it difficult
- 1Oil system seals degrade above 35 degrees C - engine must stay cool during transit
- 21,200 km through Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia in 38 degrees C ambient heat
- 3Road surface temperature 55 degrees C+ in the Balkans - radiant heat from below
- 4Driver fatigue risk in extreme heat - relay change needed mid-route
How we handled it
Reflective thermal blankets wrapped around the engine, secured over the transport stand. Scheduled driving through Greece and Serbia at night when ambient drops to 25 degrees C. Daytime rest in shaded truck stops. Driver relay swap in Budapest - a fresh crew took over for the cooler northern leg. Temperature monitoring strips on the engine casing confirmed the core never exceeded 32 degrees C throughout the journey.
